Shey Gompa (Shelri Drugdra), also known as Shey Monastery, holds significant importance and value in Upper Dolpo, Nepal, for several reasons:

Shelri Drugdra means the roaring of the snow lion from the Shelri mountain. The sacred Shelri Drugdra was instituted in 1220 AD. The great Kyobpa Jigten Sumgon, the master and founder of the Drikung Kagyu religion order sent his principal disciple the great master Drupthop Singe Yeshe to Dolpo. On his arrival in Shey Dolpo, the sacredly appeared the palace of  Chakrasamvara. Soon he made the circumambulation to the Holy Shelri Drugdra mountain and found even many miracles on the way. Most importantly, on the top of the Shelri Drugdra peak, he sacredly evidenced the Holy Kang Tise(Mt. Kailash). Master Singe Yeshe bowed three times from the peak and instituted the present holy Shelri Drugdra in the year of Dragon according to the Lunar Calendar.
